Sophia graduated from The University of Sheffield with a first class honours MChem in Chemistry in 2019, before moving to Manchester to join the 1st cohort of the Advanced Biomedical Materials Centre of Doctoral Training (ABM CDT). She commenced her PhD project in March 2020 under the supervision of Dr Marco Domingos, Dr Ahu Gumrah Dumanli-Parry and Professor Susan Kimber. She will be exploring how nanocelluloses can act as collagen fibril structural directing agents to mimic the hierarchical collagen architectures of articular cartilage (AC) by creating intricate 3D bioprinted AC scaffolds. She will be investigating how the constructs can influence the behaviour of encapsulated pluripotent stem cells, as well as the material properties of the construct and resultant neotissue.
